Bourbon - WheatedStyle
A bourbon that uses wheat instead of rye as its second grain. Without rye's spice, wheated bourbons, often called wheaters, tend to be softer, rounder and sweeter.
The Rules
- Meets every bourbon rule
- Corn still at least 51%
- Wheat replaces rye as the flavouring grain
- Usually little or no rye at all
On The Label
- Rarely printed on the label
- Well-known wheaters include Maker's Mark, W.L. Weller, Larceny and Pappy Van Winkle
What To Expect
Soft caramel, honey, bread and vanilla with a gentle, creamy texture and little spice.
Why It Matters
Wheated bourbons include some of the most hunted bottles in the world. The style also ages gracefully, which is part of the Van Winkle story.
