Palate vs. Pallet vs. PaletteMix-Up

Three words that sound the same. In tasting notes it is always palate.

PalateThe tasting word

Your sense of taste, and how a whiskey tastes in your mouth.

  • Nose, palate and finish are the three parts of a tasting note

"A rich, oily palate with cherry and oak."

PalletShipping

A wooden platform for stacking and shipping cases.

"The store got a pallet of Buffalo Trace."

PaletteColour

An artist's board of colours, or a range of colours.

"The label uses a gold and green palette."

Why It Matters

Tasting notes run nose, palate, finish. It is a small thing, but serious tasters notice when the word is wrong.
