ScotchType
Whisky made and aged in Scotland. Scotch law is strict about where, how long and in what it is aged, and names five protected styles: single malt, single grain, blended malt, blended grain and blended.
The Rules
- Distilled and aged in Scotland
- Aged at least three years in oak casks of 700 litres or less
- Bottled at 40% ABV or more
- Only water and plain caramel colouring may be added
Why It Matters
Scotland has five recognised regions (Speyside, Highlands, Lowlands, Islay, Campbeltown) with their own character; see Styles & Regions.
